Piece

Several years ago, I started writing poetry. One day I wrote regarding my cleft and I wanted to share the poem with you all.

Piece

Whole but not yet complete,

making her parents fear

that pieces would not meet.

The doctor’s expression tells them the outcome is unclear.

Parents glad that their baby girl would live.

A baby with a broken face,

much attenton to her they would give.

Her parents knew she couldn’t be replaced.

Through many hard years

and surgeries that took hours,

there were many tears.

Through all of this she gained power.

Now this young woman is confident

and uses herself as an encouragement.

  1. I am very proud of you Rebecca. I was in the nursery at the hospital taking care of you when you were born. I took care of your mom too. Your are an amazing young lady that will be able to do anything. Your mom is right you are a gift from God.

  2. Thanks for sharing your story, for making yourself vulnerable and using your life to glorify God. Congratulations! (I can’t finish this as, I can’t get to the bottom of this post…so I’ll leave it in mid-air) I am a poet, too, so I thought I would look up your poem. I read your story too. Fascinating. You are brave! My path to acceptance of the cleft has been slower than yours and I went through a lot less than you did. I am now nearly sixly and I don’t talk about what happened because I don’t want to draw attention to my face and my scar Sometimes I think I should write about my story while my Mom is still with us.

    • Thank you for the comment. You’re right, it can be scary telling your story and talking about it. I think it also depends on the “day and age” we were born. Some things back then you didn’t talk about and I get that. It’s just harder for some of us and I used to be so shy but I figure maybe my story and experiences can help a little one growing up with a cleft like we did. If you ever want to talk more please don’t hesitate to e-mail me lovethisface@gmail.com
